Kunafa: A Sweet and Delicious Middle Eastern Dessert

Ingredients:
For the syrup:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. orange blossom water
For the kunafa:
1 lb. shredded phyllo dough
1/2 lb. unsalted cheese, shredded
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup sugar
Directions:
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
Remove the syrup from the heat and stir in the lemon juice and orange blossom water. Set aside to cool.
Preheat your oven to 375°F.
In a large bowl, mix together the shredded phyllo dough, shredded cheese, melted butter, and sugar.
Grease a 9-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Add half of the kunafa mixture to the bottom of the dish and press it down to form a solid layer.
Add the remaining kunafa mixture on top and press it down to form another solid layer.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the kunafa is golden brown.
Remove from the oven and pour the cooled syrup over the kunafa, making sure to cover it evenly.
Let the kunafa cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Kunafa can be served warm or cold and is often garnished with chopped nuts, such as pistachios or almonds. It's a sweet and delicious dessert that's perfect for any occasion.
